African Rosewood is available from environmentally responsible sources, for every tree cutand purchased a fee is paid to the local authorities to re-harvest. The trees reach a heightof 15 to 18m at maturity. The trunk diameter is approximately 50 to 75cm. The sapwood is yellowish-white in colour and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood. The heartwood colour when freshly cut is is pinkish-brown and the colour ages to a rich mahogany redbrown.The grain is moderately fine and there are no distinct doors. The Rosewood has a very high resistance to abrasion and is well suited for furniture and flooring in high traffic areas. The bending strength of air-dried rosewood is similar to that of teak, which is considered to be very strong. The density of the wood is very high.
