How reefer containers work

Keeping things cool

The refrigeration unit delivers cool air through the floor of the reefer container. If you look closely, you can see grooves in the floor of the container, also known as T-plates. The T-plates allow for a constant flow of cool air around the cargo.

Powered by generator sets

The generator sets power the refrigeration unit and keep it running. Reefer containers are usually connected to the ship's power supply. However, since extremely sensitive cargo can spoil when the temperature is out of the right range, generator sets are always available as a backup power source. It is recommended to choose a reefer container with a generator set to ensure the safety of your cargo.

Keeping things fresh with ventilation

The point of a reefer container is to keep your cargo fresh. Fruits and vegetables release heat, water and carbon dioxide. If these gases are not removed, they can cause the cargo to ripen, age and go stale in uncontrolled conditions, causing damage to the cargo. Therefore, fresh air is circulated in the reefer container.

Keeping relative humidity

Different cargoes have different requirements for humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the relative humidity in the box according to the cargo. Using a dehumidification function can help keep the humidity in the reefer container at the right level.

The data logger, supported by a remote modem, continuously monitors supply air temperature, return air temperature, ambient temperature and humidity levels.

Drainage system removes excess water

The refrigerated container is equipped with a drainage system. In case of water accumulation, drain pipes inside the container will remove the waste water.

Common faults of refrigerated containers during refrigeration

1. Turn on the power switch. If the refrigeration system does not work, first check whether the power conversion switch is at the voltage you selected, whether the power socket is plugged in, and whether the fuse is damaged;

2. Turn on the power switch. All systems of the refrigeration machine are working, but there is no refrigeration. In this case, there is generally no refrigerant;

3. After starting up, the refrigeration machine automatically shuts down after working for a few minutes, and then automatically starts up again a few minutes later. In this case, there is mostly a lack of refrigerant. If bubbles are visible through the refrigerant display mirror 20 minutes after starting up, it means that there is a lack of refrigerant. If the automatic shutdown occurs in summer, if it is not due to a lack of refrigerant, then there is too much dust in the condenser, or it is caused by too much refrigerant;

4. The refrigeration machine is working, and the computer cannot store the actual temperature. Generally, the temperature sensor or computer system of the refrigeration machine is broken;

5. All systems of the refrigerated container are working normally, and the refrigeration condition is also normal, but the temperature fluctuation range reflected on the temperature recording paper dial is too large. The reasons may be: the vent is not closed, the refrigerated container door is not closed tightly, or the refrigerated container is partially damaged, resulting in cold air leakage in the box;

6. Generally speaking, the defrost cycle of the refrigerated box is set before refrigeration, and the defrost is very regular during the refrigeration process. If the defrost time is too long when the defrost is executed, it means that the defrost control switch is broken. If the defrost is terminated during the operation of the refrigerator, it means that the heater is broken;

7. When the refrigerated container is running, if it is found that the set temperature is the same as the actual temperature measured manually in the box, and the temperature displayed on the temperature recording dial of the refrigerated box is too different from the former, this indicates that the temperature sensor is broken.
